During the Fall 2024 semester, Linnea Mayo '26 and Saanvi Bajaj’ '27 served as Community Engagement Fellows for the Center of Hartford Engagement and Research (CHER). As fellows, they aim to inspire Trinity College students to explore Hartford beyond the campus boundaries, foster a sense of community among other CHER students, and advocate for destigmatizing preconceived notions about the city. This semester they have emphasized building long-term community partnerships and relationships within Hartford.

The Center for Hartford Engagement and Research is pleased to share final research posters from the Fall 2024 Community Learning Research Fellows! This competitive program allows selected students with previous community engagement experience to challenge their learning by taking on research or creative projects grounded in the value of mutual benefit: students deepen their learning and their project advances the goals of Hartford community partners.

Now in its sixth year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clinic at Trinfo.Cafe is expanding its free tax preparation services and support network through collaboration with the Liberal Arts Action Lab Family Finance Project. These efforts underscore the clinic’s crucial role in supporting low income families and advocating for policy changes in Hartford.

Linnea Mayo '26 and VySa Nguyen '26, as Community Engagement Fellows for CHER, have worked to deepen the connections between the Trinity College and the City of Hartford. Their efforts focus on encouraging students to explore Hartford's diverse communities and cultural offerings, while also working to change any negative perceptions about the city.

Inviting Schoolchildren to Campus with OMA, CHER announcement, and more

Students in Professor Jack Dougherty’s “Data Visualization for All” (EDUC 206) course have been working on visualizing Hartford “crash” and “trash” data this semester. In collaboration with the City of Hartford’s planning division and the Center for Leadership and Justice, students worked on projects such as “Analyzing The Impact of Hartford's Traffic Calming Installations” and “Where Does Hartford Waste Go?”.

During the summer of 2021, with the support of a Mellon Inclusive Pedagogy grant from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the Center for Hartford Engagement and Research (CHER) examined the experiences of students of color in community engagement programs at Trinity. As one response to the findings, CHER recently announced the Community Learning Faculty Toolkit, a compilation that includes resources on anti-racist community learning and Hartford history.
